There is a really good discussion about the future of ham radio over on eham.net right now.

Do you think that ham radio is dead? Will it go away in the near future?

I say no. While I do think that it will change due to the nature of the hobby, I do not think that it will be going away any time soon. Amateur radio is all about new technology and making things work for yourself. It's no surprise to me that people in the hobby get bored with simple voice or CW and move into other more complicated modes. That is where the "fun" is right now. I get it.

That being said, it would be nice if more folks hung out on the local 2 meter repeaters in their free time, but that might be asking too much.
