In this lesson we are going to talk about the basics of creating a preparedness plan for you and your family. This is not meant to be complex, just meant to get you thinking in a way that is structured and doesn't miss anything. Making a simple plan will allow you to take a solid look at what preps are actually needed for you and where you live based on real scenarios. It is very easy to get side tracked and start buying or working on preps that are nothing more than an effort to "keep up with the Joneses " so to speak. We want to encourage making well rounded preparations based on real scenarios that you may face. Size up the scenarios The most important thing that we can do is realize what we may be up against in the future. There are so many things that can possibly happen to us, it is good to write it down and really look at it. In this lesson we want you to make a spreadsheet. In one column write down every possible disaster that could come your way. Some examples; Earthquake, Blizzard, Economic Collapse, Foreign invasion. Then in the next column write what the outcome of these disasters would be. Example; If there were a blizzard, then the power would go out, the roads would be closed, etc. Then in the next column write the duration of the disaster. Example; 2 weeks. Then in the next column write down any preps you would think you would need to get through that scenario. Example; a snow blower, generator 2 weeks worth of food. Finally, in the last column write any training that you would need to get to make it easier to deal with as well. The last thing you will need to do with this spreadsheet is to gather the information off of it. What did we learn? In the worst scenario we would need xx amount of food, or maybe we need a snow blower, but don’t have one. Use this list to figure out what you need to store and what you might have that you don’t need. If you own a snow blower, but you live in Florida, sell it to buy something that would be better suited to you. Finding Out What Could Happen in Your Area. Contact the organizations who can tell you what disasters could happen in your area, like the red cross or the salvation army. Find out what your community’s warning signals are, what they sound like and what you should do when you hear them. Learn about the disaster plans at work, school, daycare and other places where your family spends time. If you have animals, find out about animal care. They may not be allowed in some places during and after a disaster. Find out how to help the elderly and disabled. Create a Disaster Plan for your family. Meet with your family and discuss what types of disasters could happen in your area and what to do. Be sure to discuss the steps of evacuation, choose 2 places to meet family members that are outside your house if members are home and outside your neighborhood in case you can’t get to your home. (City Park, church, school play ground, etc.) You may also want to ask an out-of-state family member or friend to be your family’s “Contact Person”. After a disaster, communications can be difficult. Many times it is easier to get through to your contact person out of state than to make a local call. If your families members become separated in a disaster have them call this person and let them know where they are and if all are well with them. Practice and Maintain your plan A. Conduct fire and emergency evacuation drills. B. Quiz your family every six months so they don’t forget. C. Test and recharge fire extinguishers. D. Check/rotate food & water in your evacuation-kit every 6 months. E. Test smoke detectors monthly. Change batteries every 6 months. F. Remember to always remain calm. Panic causes accidents. The level of Risk is directly proportionate to the Level of your Comfort. The more comfortable you are, the more risk you take that something can happen to you. Survivalism/Preparedness is all about relying on your acquired skills to scan for risk and adjust your level of comfort to match. We, as human beings, are a little too easy to accept what our government tells us, especially when they say that there is little risk, and we can relax. Even more amazing, are the people that think these are just scare tactics, and that nothing will ever happen to them! I highly doubt it. Learn to gather information about the risk level of things that pertain to you and you will be a much better person.
