I see a pretty big decline in the amount of preppers interested in ham radio and it is a bit worrisome to me.

I've heard a lot of excuses, but with cheap radios easy to come by, the ability to use a PO box for licensing, and readily available easy to use study guides I don't really think any of them are valid.

If you aren't a licensed amateur yet, please take some time to reconsider.

I have a general license. As my main radio I have a Yaesu VX-8dr/de. For backup I have 5 Baofeng vhf/uhf fm transceivers just in case.

Excellent. Are you able to get on HF ever?

The sad truth is I have never once transmitted. I have listened from time to time but I've always felt a bit overwhelmed in using the radios. I have it on my list of things to do this winter after I get snowed out of my outdoor prepping.

That is totally understandable. Hopefully some day you will find someone to talk with that makes it comfortable and easy. I remember my first QSO, I was definitely nervous.

I hate all the licensing and registration. they want a license for everything. Drones, radios, toilet paper, everything.

While I am not going to say it's ok to break the law, there are well documented ways of getting around them. I'm not going to get into them here, but they are easy enough to find.
